Happy Birthday to my beautiful and amazing momma!
Thank you for your unconditional love and support (Sandy appreciates it too!). : )
Ich Liebe dich!!
I am a scientist by day and a photographer by night. Follow my journey as I juggle pipettes and lenses in this crazy thing I call life.
Here you will find my most recent work and, if you're lucky, my personal ramblings about Cooper, my love of blueberry muffins, and videos of me dancing. Please contain your excitement. :)
This is the life I love.
Happy Birthday to my beautiful and amazing momma!

I inherited a little dinette set when we moved in to our place 6 months ago, and it was due for a little sprucing up! It was a birch colored set with a neutral upholstery and I knew I wanted a little punch of color. Here is what we started with…
What we used: sander, exterior semi-gloss paint (for easy cleaning and durability), staple gun, fabric, screwdriver, scissors, and last but not least, a paint brush…
First we separated the cushions from the chairs to paint and reupholster. This part is fairly simple. Really, the hardest part is not losing any of the screws!
Next, we reupholstered the cushions with a bright yellow fabric. I think yellow is my current obsession : )
Like most tables, this one had a sealant on it. To allow the paint to adhere properly, we had to rough up the surface a bit with a little sanding….
Ok, if you don’t like painting, this part is painful! We ended up doing 3 coats to get really nice coverage. After 4 chairs and a table you are pretty over painting. Let’s just say we are so glaaaaaaad this part is done. For real.
Of course, the painting was well worth it in the end! I love how the table and chairs turned out! It is always extra rewarding when you do the work yourself. I’m sure Art is cringing at the thought of my next project haha…
Thanks mom for your tools and sweat/muscle! Art, thanks for painting against your will. : )
If you’re thinkin’ I didn’t come here to see your latest home project, then here is a little sneak peek from this weekends shoot!
Happy Monday!

Meet Lola. She is perfect, and I love her.
If you are in the market for a bag that you can store your camera in and not look like you are hiking, definitely check out Epiphanie! Their bags are divine. I bet you will fall in love!!

Two weeks ago I debuted our little garden. Everything is starting to come in! Check out the change in the tomatoes! Beautiful huh?
Radishes are breaking through and jalapeños are peaking out…
Can you smell the rosemary and peppermint??
Art caring for his garden. His mama would be proud. : )
Amazing what a little sunlight, water, and love can do. Can’t wait to eat it up!
Getting ready to watch USA vs. England. USA! USA! USA! : )
Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

So I rented an 85mm this past weekend and kinda fell in love! Hello delicious bokeh!
I’m curious what your favorite lens is and why?? Share your secrets! : )
Happy Friday!

Art has been wanting to start a garden for quite some time. Together, our moms could probably supply enough veggies and herbs for an army, so we had a fair amount of guidance and inspiration. My green thumb needs some work, so this is definitely Art’s project for now haha.
My folks helped get our garden started for Art’s birthday. (notice I said ‘our’…spectating counts right??) Everything is going well so far….

It is cool to see all the changes over the past 2 weeks! Baby tomatoes just started peaking out….
Any gardening advice or vegetables you like to grow???
This past Saturday I had the distinct pleasure of joining the Villarreal family at the San Diego Great Strides, Cystic Fibrosis fundraiser walk at De Anza Cove. 8 year old DJ, my friend Adam’s son, has struggled with CF his entire life. To do the everyday things we take for granted, DJ takes 30+ pills and completes almost 2 hours of inhalation treatments/chest physiotherapy daily. Yes. Every. Single. Day. I am continually blown away by not only his strength and courage, but that of his family. I am in awe of their insurmountable faith, love, and hope.
Last year, DJ’s Fleet of Feet had 35 walkers. This year, there was ~130 walkers! I was blown away by all the love and support from family and friends, it was literally contagious. Here are my favorite shots from the day…
The group!
DJ’s beautiful mom Maggie is such a stud! She was recognized for raising over $7,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation…
The day started out a bit hazy, but in typical San Diego fashion, the sun was able to sneak out…

I love that DJ’s baseball homies came out to support him…
Here is a little video/slideshow summary of the day. It is a compilation of my perspective and many others (thanks to all of you that contributed!).

Adam and Maggie, thank you for letting us share in your day. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for DJ and CF research! My words don’t do justice to how amazing I think your family is, I feel so blessed to have your grace and hope in my life. Thank you!!
Much love,
Nicole
Mom and I had a wonderful time in San Francisco this past weekend. The weather was gorgeous and it was nice to spend some quality time with my momma! Here are some photos from our get away…

P.S. Happy HAPPY Birthday to my Tine Tine!
Dear Mom,
I have so many thoughts and words swirling in my head to describe how much I value your unconditional love, friendship, and never ending support. I am forever grateful for your selflessness and wisdom that have blessed my existence. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without you. I can’t say thank you enough.
Dad and I wanted to do something a little different this Mother’s Day to treat you! Sooooooooo, we are headed to our favorite city for the weekend…
Pack your bags because our flight leaves early Friday morning!! I’m really excited! It was so difficult to not tell you…now you know what my plans are this weekend. : )
Ich Liebe dich!

I have been staring at my computer screen for an hour, and believe it or not, this post is NOT writing it self!! I need to purchase a telepathic laptop or something. Hopefully Apple is working on it. : )
Here we go…
It has been one year since I declared I wanted to be a photographer. Ok, maybe it wasn’t exactly a declaration…probably more like a whisper, covered with a *cough cough*, but I verbalized it! It has been a year of ups and downs, successes and failures, and mainly me trying to find a balance. This past year flew by, and I’m not really sure how to summarize it. I do know that it has been such a blessing to document so much love. It is so cool to freeze a moment in someone’s life, capturing just how they are in this very moment.
A little flash back from last year, peaceful baby Vyanna and her big brother Ethan…
I remember how crazy nervous I was last April. Rolling up with my big black bean bag occupying my entire back seat, 3 blankets, and a 50mm 1.8 for my first newborn shoot. Err shoot period. I’m so glad I faced my fears of not being ready and blahblahblah excuses. I like to be prepared ok?? Sometimes it is the moments of unpreparedness that I experience the most creativity. Photography, and mainly photographing kids, has helped me let go (slightly) of my control freak ways, teaching me to live in the moment. Enjoying laughter, knowing glances, and just small beautiful moments that often go unappreciated. For this I am grateful.
Last weekend I caught up with my favorite little family and boy have they grown. Ethan still has the same amazing smile, minus the chubby cheeks…
And Vyanna, well, she is all grown up! It’s amazing how rapidly we grow in our first year of life. She is on the verge of walking…
He is shy in front of the lens, but what you missed were his mean robot moves and cha cha slide shenanigans earlier…

Always has the best seat in the house…
Tracey, thank you for trusting me and my vision. I know handing over a newborn is not easy. : ) I am so excited to see how well the family is doing and can’t wait to see what the future holds. I am so thankful that we have kept in touch and I appreciate your friendship and support! See you soon!! xoxo
To my handful of readers and new photography friends, thanks for joining me on this journey. Your kind words and encouragement mean more than you know. I heart you!!
Warmly,
Nicole
